RECAP – Through week 15 of the 2021 season, T.J. Watt is poised to lead the lead the league for the second year in a row. He has already eclipsed his quarterback sacks total for the 2020 season in which he recorded 15 sacks. With 3 games remaining in the regular season the title is up for grabs. Quinn, N. Bolsa, and Garrett are all within 2.5 sacks of Watt and with one stellar game getting after the quarterback the top of the leader-board can change in a flash.
The end of the season will be exciting and rookie sensation Micah Parsons could break the official NFL sack record for rookies, (Jevon Kearse’s 1999 14.5 sack mark for the Tennessee Titans), but Parsons 2021 total will likely be a far cry from the 23 sack rookie season Al “Bubba” Baker registered in 1978 with the Detroit Lions. The NFL did not officially recognize the QB Sack as a defensive statistic until the 1982 season.
Al “Bubba” Baker recorded 23 QB Sacks during his rookie campaign in 1978. Four seasons before the NFL would recognize the quarterback sack as an official defensive statistic.
